WishList Member Points Add-on - Leaderboard

Adding some healthy and friendly competition amongst members can be an effective way to encourage interaction. The Points Add-on includes a Leaderboard widget you can use to display a variety of standings related to points. This can include daily or monthly points leaders and you can also include an “All Time” list of points leaders.

The Leaderboard widget can be added to your site and your members can watch the standings dynamically update based on the actions of members. Perhaps you have the Points Add-on configured to award a set number of points each time a member login. Or maybe you provide points to members when they leave a comment. Whatever the case may be, if members know they can rise up the leaderboard based on actions they complete within the site, they are often more inclined to engage in those actions.

Enable the Points Leaderboard Widget

You can access your available widgets in the Appearance > Widgets section in WordPress.

WishList Member Points Add-on - Leaderboard Widget

In the example screenshot below, the Main Sidebar widget has been selected and searching for the “Points Add on” will display the Leaders in Points widget. Click the widget and it will be added to the selected sidebar.

WishList Member Points Add-on - Leaderboard Widget

The default settings will display three leaderboard sections:

  • All Time Leaders. This list will display the users with the highest overall points total.
  • Monthly Leaders. This list will display the users with the highest overall points total for the current month.
  • Daily Leaders. This list will display the users with the highest overall points total for the current day.

The ID of users to exclude on this list option allows you to prevent specific users from appearing on the leaderboard. This can be helpful if you have test accounts or internal team members you want to exclude from appearing on the list.

You can also select the number of top users to show for each of those sections. The default number is 3 but you can show more or less users on the lists you display.

Each of the three sections includes an enable/disable feature so you can select which sections you want to be seen.

WishList Member Points Add-on - Leaderboard Widget Settings

The name of the Leaderboard and the names of the three sections can all be edited. This means you can adjust these names to fit your membership site.

The example screenshot below shows the Leaderboard widget set with “Top Member Points” as the title and to only display the All Time Leaders points total. 5 top users will be displayed and no users will be excluded from the list. The Sidebar Title has also been left blank so a title for the overall Leaderboard widget won't appear on the live site.

A Sidebar Title can be useful in keeping everything clear if you display multiple sections in the widget or if you display multiple widgets on your site.

View the Points Leaderboard Widget on the Site

Once you've configured the Points Leaderboard widget, you can see how that appears on the live site.

The screenshot example below shows what members will see based on the settings mentioned earlier in this article. In this case, a list of the top 5 users for all time points can be seen.

WishList Member Points Add-on - Leaderboard Widget Display

You can easily display a list of dynamically driven point totals that your members can see whenever they visit your site. This bit of visual encouragement can help increase member engagement as they strive to make the list and climb it.

The Points add-on in WishList Member allows you to award Points to users based on criteria you create. You have full control over creating the Triggers and Points Rules that add (or remove) Points for users. This means you could create any Points Rules you want. As an example, a Points Rule could be set for a specific number of Points to be given to users each day they login to your site. Or you could issue Points when a user posts their first comment.

Those Points can also be redeemed by users for a variety of extras or exclusive access to content you create. These are only a few quick examples. You can really get creative when deciding how you want to provide Points to users and how you want to allow Points to be redeemed.

You also have the option to incorporate additional WishList Member Add-ons with Points like Quizzes, Badges and Courses.

Details on installing and enabling WishList Member Add-ons are available Right Here.

This knowledge base entry includes details and examples of the available Points features and functionality within WishList Member. The table of contents on the right can be used to jump to any section.

Incentives that encourage Users to complete a Course can be an effective way to increase engagement and raise the overall number of completed Courses.

We are going to address the following question:

How Do I Assign Points to a User when a Course is Completed?

Related: Click Here for info on assigning a Badge to a User when a Course is Completed.

With WishList Member, you can add a set number of Points to a User based on Triggers. In this example, we are going to run through the steps to assign 50 Points to a User who completes the “Learning to Skydive” Course.

The first step is to create a Course. (Details on Course creation can be found in the Course Setup Overview and Course Builder articles)

Once you have your Course created, you can set it to assign Points to Users when they complete that Course. This will be done by setting up a Points Rule in the Points > Setup section.

The Points Rule will handle the adding of the Points.

The green plus icon on the top of the Points Rules section can be clicked to begin the Points creation process.

Set a Name for the Points Rule and click the green Apply button.

We have set the Rule name as “50 Points for Completing Course” in this case.

The Points Rule has a Name so the Edit Setup Rules section will appear and the various settings can be configured for this specific Points Rule.

We want this rule to assign 50 Points when a Course is completed, so the settings can be adjusted accordingly.

In the example shown below, Users will be issued 50 Points when they mark the “Learning to Skydive” Course as complete.

The blue Save or green Save & Close button can be clicked once all settings are configured.

The Points Rule has now been created and any Users who complete the “Learning to Skydive” Course will be issued 50 Points.

More details on Points can be found in the Points – Setup Overview article.

You can use shortcodes to display Points-related information to Users on your site.

This includes information such as their Lifetime Points, Points Redeemed, Points Remaining, and more.

There is a corresponding shortcode for each option. Each can be used to display one Points Total or multiple shortcodes can be used together to display a Points section for Users.

In the example below, four shortcodes have been inserted into a page named “Points”.

The shortcodes can be inserted into any page or post and they will display the corresponding information to Users.

Lifetime Points: [wlpts_lifetime_points] – Displays the total number of Points the User has earned.

Remaining Points: [wlpts_remaining_points] – Displays the total number of Points the User has remaining.

Points Redeemed: [wlpts_redeemed_points] – Displays the total number of Points the User has redeemed.

User Points Logs: [wlpts_user_logs] – Displays a table showing the Points transactions for the User.

The look of the page or post can be designed based on your site theme.

How Do Users Redeem Points?

The first step is to setup Point Rules. (Details on Points Rules setup creation can be found in the Points Redemption section of the Points Setup Overview article).

Once you have your Points Rules created, you can allow Users to redeem their Points for items.

In this example, we are going to run through the steps to create a Redemption button for a Badge named “Night Sky”.

A page/post can be created on the site and Shortcodes can be inserted to display the Redemption buttons.

The Shortcodes that will display the Redemption option on the live site can be found in the Points Redemption section in the Shortcodes column.

Note: The Redemption URL can also be used to allow for Redemption. The Redemption URL can be found in the Points > Redemption > Click to edit Rule > Settings section.

Inserting the Shortcode or using the Redemption URL on a page/post will allow the User to click the button or link and run through the Redemption process.

The example below shows the Shortcode inserted into a WordPress page.

Click the blue Save/Update button and the page is all set.

The button will now appear on the live site and the Users can redeem their Points to be issued the corresponding Badge.

There are a number of reasons a new Point Rule might be needed. Maybe you'd like to award a set number of points when a User posts their first comment. Or perhaps you have a case of wanting to subtract points if a user fails a quiz.

These are only a couple examples. They are plenty of reasons to create a point rule and many options to customize the process.

We are going to address the following question:

Points – How Do I Setup a Point Rule?

Related: Click Here for info on assigning Points to a User when a Course is Completed.
Related: Click Here for more details in the Points Overview

Point Rules can be created in the Points > Setup > Points Rules section.

Each Rule will add/subtract the set number of Points based on how the Trigger is configured. “When this happens” “Then do this”

The green plus icon on the top of the Points Rules section can be clicked to begin the Points creation process.

Set a Name for the Points Rule and click the green Apply button.

Once the Points Rule has a Name, the Edit Setup Rules section will appear and the various settings can be configured for that specific Points Rule.

There is a variety of available Triggers available in the “When this happens” dropdown. Selecting a specific Trigger from the dropdown will result in showing the specific options for that Trigger.

Triggers can range from user login and comments to completing a Quiz or Course. There is a wide selection of available Triggers.

The Screenshot below displays a configuration for a Point Rule named “Pass Quiz” that will add 15 points to anyone who passes the Skydiving quiz.

The blue Save or green Save & Close button can be clicked once all settings are configured.

The above is just one example of a Point Rule. There are various triggers that can be set to apply actions. We recommend checking out the “When this happens” dropdown to see the various options available. Selecting a trigger will show even more actions that can be used.
